How Can I Keep From Singing

To say that the world is a little… volatile… is somewhat of an understatement. It often seems that each new day brings a new level of depravity. It would seem, both literally and metaphorically, the world is on fire. People are more divided than ever. Disasters of both the natural and manmade variety are becoming more and more common. Society is less trusting and more hostile towards each other. At times, it almost feels like the world is a powderkeg that is dangerously close to blowing.

But even in the midst of all this, there is still immense goodness in the world. People are divided, yes, but I have seen many acts of grace, love, and compassion. The world is burning, sure, but the ashes of death are what brings new life. And it was in this backdrop that I heard a whispering in my prayer. The verses of an hymn, an older hymn: “if Love is lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing?”

The world is covered in darkness, yes. But even the deepest darkness is dispelled by the smallest flame. If nothing else, the flames of hope are not dead. They are small, but everyday they are fanned and grown by the smallest acts of love. Whatever the day brings, however bad things are, we must always remember that the sun is going to rise in the morning. And since Love is lord or heaven and earth, I will keep singing.
